Initiative LUNA PARK und Kosmas Kosmopoulos in Zusammenarbeit mit der Gesundbrunnen-Grundschule, unterstützt im Rahmen des Projektes „ANPASSUNGEN“ durch Fördermittel aus dem Projektfonds des QM Badstraße als Teil des Bundesprogramms „Soziale Stadt“.
Die Natur, die einst den Menschen hervorgebracht hat, muss heute vor ihm geschützt werden. Nicht um ihretwillen, sondern weil der Mensch ohne sie nicht überleben kann. Aber mit dem Wachstum der Menschheit wächst beständig auch der Bedarf an Energie und Rohstoffen. Am meisten unter der ungebremsten Ausbeutung der Ressourcen leiden diejenigen Regionen, die nicht zu den Wohlstandszentren gehören. Dort verursacht die Ausbeutung nicht nur großflächige ökologische Verwüstungen, sondern auch immer brutaler werdende Verteilungs- und Vertreibungskriege. Beides führt zwangsläufig zu Fluchtbewegungen, ja, ganzen Völkerwanderungen.
Die westliche Wohlstandsgemeinschaft lässt Krötentunnel unter ihren Autobahnen bauen, darüber Brücken für Wildtiere, auf dem Weg von A nach B: „Crossing the Freeway“, als letzter Ausweg für Tiere, den für sie mörderischen Bauwerken der hochindustrialisierten Zivilisation aus dem Weg zu gehen. Menschen indessen werden auch die letzten Wege versperrt.
In einer existentiellen, reduzierten Tanzsprache versucht der griechischstämmige Choreograf und Brennpunktschulen-Pädagoge Kosmas Kosmopoulos das Unmögliche: „Crossing the Freeway“, den Freeway zu überqueren. Freiheit ist immer die Freiheit der anderen – also derer, denen keine Hindernisse im Weg stehen?
„Crossing the Freeway“ ist das vierte Stück, das im Rahmen der griechisch-deutschen Produktionsgemeinschaft LUNA PARK entstanden ist. Wie auch für „Lessen to the Fourth" (2016), „CAPTURE & discard“ (2017) und „Mountains of Desire“ (2018) wird zu etwa gleichen Teilen in Athen und Berlin geprobt und so eine Verbindung zwischen den Tänzer*innen der beiden Szenen hergestellt. Die Berliner Proben finden in den Räumen der Gesundbrunnen-Grundschule im Stadtteil Wedding statt und werden an Workshops mit den Schüler*innen gekoppelt. Der Choreograf und Brennpunkschulen-Pädagoge Kosmas Kosmopoulos versucht so, Schule als Kultur- und Begegnungsort zu öffnen und in den künstlerischen Alltag in zu integrieren. „Crossing the Freeway“ ist wie auch seine Vorgänger-Stücke vor dem Hintergrund dieser Erfahrung entstanden. Die Musik stammt wieder von Antonios Palaskas, griechischer Elektro-Pionier und Mitbegründer der Bands Stereo Nova und Supermarket. Als Grundlage seines narrativen, atmosphärischen Beats dient ihm dieses Mal eins der ersten Computerspiele, Pac-Man. Doch während Becketts „Try again. Fail again. Fail better.“ wie eine digitale Spielanleitung klingen mag, fragen sich die Tänzer*innen in „Crossing The Freeway“: Was, wenn es nur einen (letzten) Versuch gibt? Die Tage des Scheiterns scheinen gezählt.

About
Nature, that once gave birth to humankind, has now to be protected from him. Not for its own sake, but because humankind cannot survive without it. But mankind grows, and so does the need for energy and resources. Those regions, which do not belong to the centres of prosperity, suffer the most from the unrestrained exploitation of resources. There, this exploitation causes not only widespread ecological devastation, but also increasingly brutal distribution and expulsion wars. Both inevitably lead to flows of refugees and entire migrations
The western prosperity society builds toad tunnels under their highways, beyond them bridges for wild animals, on their way from A to B: Crossing the Freeway, to avoid the murderous buildings of highly industrialized civilization. At the same time, the last escape routes for humans were blocked.
Using an existential, reduced dance language, the Greek-born choreographer and deprived area school teacher Kosmas Kosmopoulos tries what seems to be impossible: Crossing the Freeway. Freedom is always the freedom of the others – of those who have no obstacles in their way?
Crossing the Freeway is the fourth piece created by the Greek-German artistic production community LUNA PARK. As in Lesson to the Fourth, Capture & discard and Mountains of Desire, the rehearsals took place equally in Athens and Berlin, thus creating a connection between the dancers of the two local scenes. The rehearsals in Berlin take place in the Gesundbrunnen Primary School in Wedding and are coupled with several workshops for pupils. Thereby, the choreographer Kosmas Kosmopoulos tries to open up the school as a place of culture and encounter and to integrate it into everyday artistic life. Crossing the Freeway, like its predecessors, was created against the background of this experience. Again, the music comes from Antonios Palaskas, Greek Electro Pop pioneer and co-founder of the bands Stereo Nova and Supermarket. This time, his narrative, atmospheric beats are based on the famous 1980s computer game Pac-Man. But while Beckett's "Try again. Fail again. Fail better." may sound like a digital game manual, the dancers in Crossing the Freeway wonder: What, if there is only one (last) attempt? The days of failure seem to be counted.
